Vibrating Washer? Basic Checks Guide

Try these simple steps to reduce washing machine vibration and walking.

Before You Call: Simple Vibration Checks

Is your washing machine shaking excessively during spin cycles? Before calling for service, perform these basic checks related to load balance and leveling, which are the most common causes of vibration.
Important: This guide covers load balancing, leveling, and checking shipping bolts. It does not cover diagnosing or repairing internal suspension components.

⚠️ SAFETY FIRST! READ BEFORE PROCEEDING! ⚠️

ALWAYS unplug the washing machine before attempting to level it or check underneath.
Be careful when tilting or moving the washing machine; it is very heavy. Get help if needed.
If you suspect the floor is weak, consult a structural professional.
If you are unsure or uncomfortable performing any step, STOP and contact a qualified professional.

Step-by-Step Basic Checks for Vibration/Walking

  1. Check Load Balance

Stop the machine. Open the lid/door and redistribute the clothes evenly. Avoid washing single heavy, absorbent items (like bathmats) alone, as they easily unbalance the load. Try the spin cycle again. This is the most common fix!

    Check Load Balance
  2. Check if Washer is Level

Unplug the washer. Place a level on top of the machine (check front-to-back and side-to-side). Most washers have adjustable feet. Tilt the machine slightly (get help!) to access the feet. Turn the feet up or down until the washer is level and stable, with all feet firmly contacting the floor. There are often lock nuts on the feet that need to be tightened against the base after adjustment. Check your manual for specific instructions.

  3. Check for Removed Shipping Bolts (New Installations)

If the washer is newly installed, ensure all shipping bolts and packing materials were removed from the back and/or underneath. These are used to secure the drum during transport and will cause severe vibration if left in place. Consult your installation manual for their location and removal instructions.

  4. Check Flooring

Ensure the washer is on a solid, level floor. Weak or uneven flooring, especially wood floors on upper levels, can amplify vibration. Consider using anti-vibration pads under the feet, but this may not solve issues caused by weak flooring or internal machine problems.

Still Shaking Violently? Time for Professional Help

If you have ensured the load is balanced, the machine is perfectly level, shipping bolts are removed, and the floor is stable, yet the washer still vibrates excessively or walks, the problem likely lies with worn or broken internal suspension components (suspension rods, shock absorbers).
Replacing suspension parts requires opening the machine cabinet and should be done by a qualified technician to ensure it's done correctly and safely. Ignoring severe vibration can lead to further damage.
