Fridge Not Cooling? Basic Checks First
Try these simple steps before calling for professional refrigerator repair.
Before You Call: Simple Fridge Checks
SAFETY FIRST! READ BEFORE PROCEEDING!
Step-by-Step Basic Cooling Checks
Check Temperature Settings
Verify that the refrigerator and freezer temperature controls are set correctly. Recommended settings are typically around 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer.
Sometimes dials or buttons can be accidentally bumped or changed. Ensure they are at the manufacturer's recommended setting (check your owner's manual if unsure).
Inspect Door Seals (Gaskets)
Check the rubber seals around the refrigerator and freezer doors for any tears, cracks, or warping. Ensure they are clean and making full contact with the fridge body when closed.
A simple test: Close the door on a dollar bill. If you can easily pull the bill out without resistance, the seal might be weak in that spot, allowing warm air in.
Check for Blocked Air Vents
Cold air needs to circulate between the freezer and refrigerator compartments. Locate the air vents inside both compartments (often small grilles on the back or side walls).
Ensure food items, containers, or frost buildup are not blocking these vents. Rearrange items if necessary to allow free airflow.
Clean Condenser Coils (Use Caution)
Unplug the refrigerator first! Condenser coils release heat from the refrigerant. If they are covered in dust or pet hair, the fridge can't cool efficiently.
Locate the coils. They are usually on the back of the fridge or underneath behind a bottom front grille (kick plate). Check your manual if unsure.
If accessible, carefully vacuum the coils using a soft brush attachment. Be gentle to avoid damaging the coils or fins.
Note: If coils are difficult to access or you're uncomfortable, skip this step and let a professional handle it.
Ensure Proper Airflow Around Fridge
Refrigerators need space around them, especially at the back and top, for heat to dissipate. Make sure the fridge isn't pushed too tightly against the wall or enclosed in cabinetry without adequate ventilation space (check manual for clearance requirements).
