Ice Maker Not Working? Basic Checks Guide

Try these simple steps if your refrigerator isn't making or dispensing ice.

Before You Call: Simple Ice Maker Checks

Is your ice bin empty or the dispenser not working? Before assuming a major repair, check these common and simple things that can prevent your ice maker from functioning correctly.
Important: This guide covers basic checks like the control arm, water supply, and filter. It does not cover internal repairs to the ice maker module or water valve.

⚠️ SAFETY FIRST! READ BEFORE PROCEEDING! ⚠️

Be prepared for potential water spills when checking filters or lines. Have towels ready.
Know the location of the main water shut-off valve for the refrigerator line before checking connections.
If you are unsure or uncomfortable performing any step, STOP and contact a qualified professional.

Step-by-Step Basic Ice Maker Checks

  1. Check Ice Maker Control Arm / On/Off Switch

Locate the ice maker inside the freezer. Many have a metal control arm (bail wire). Ensure this arm is in the 'Down' or 'On' position. If it's lifted up, it signals the ice maker to stop producing ice (often happens when the bin is full or manually lifted). Some models have an On/Off switch instead; ensure it's turned on.

  2. Check Water Supply Valve

Ensure the water supply valve connected to the refrigerator's water line is fully open. This valve is usually located under the sink, behind the fridge, or in the basement/crawlspace. If it was recently turned off, open it fully.

    Check Water Supply Valve
  3. Check Water Filter

A clogged water filter can restrict water flow to the ice maker. If you haven't changed your filter recently (typically every 6 months), try replacing it according to your refrigerator manual's instructions.

    Check Water Filter
  4. Check Freezer Temperature

The freezer must be cold enough (around 0°F or -18°C) for the ice maker's internal thermostat to trigger the ice-making cycle. If your freezer is too warm, address the cooling issue first.

  5. Check for Kinked Water Line

Carefully pull the fridge away from the wall. Inspect the thin water line running to the back of the fridge for any sharp kinks or pinches that could restrict water flow. Gently straighten any kinks found.

    Check for Kinked Water Line
  6. Check Dispenser Lock / Ice Chute (Dispenser Issues)

If the ice maker is making ice but it won't dispense, check if a 'Dispenser Lock' or 'Control Lock' feature is activated on the control panel. Also, check the ice chute in the door for any lodged ice cubes blocking the path. Carefully remove any blockage (use a plastic utensil, not sharp metal).

Ice Maker Still Not Working? Time for Professional Help

If you've performed these checks – the control arm is down, water supply is on, filter is new, freezer is cold, line isn't kinked, dispenser isn't locked/blocked – and you still have no ice or dispensing issues, the problem likely lies with the water inlet valve, the ice maker module itself, or the dispenser mechanism.
Due to the electrical components and water connections involved, further diagnosis or repair of these parts should be performed by a qualified appliance repair professional.
