Noisy Dryer? Basic Checks Guide

Try these simple steps to identify or reduce common dryer noises before calling for service.

Before You Call: Simple Dryer Noise Checks

Is your dryer making concerning noises like squealing, thumping, or grinding? Before calling for repair, perform these basic checks, as sometimes the cause is simple like a stray object.
Important: This guide focuses on checking for loose objects and identifying noise location. It does not cover diagnosing or repairing internal components like rollers, pulleys, or motors. Persistent squealing, grinding, or thumping usually requires professional service.

⚠️ SAFETY FIRST! READ BEFORE PROCEEDING! ⚠️

ALWAYS unplug the dryer before attempting to inspect the drum or blower wheel area.
Be careful of sharp edges inside the drum or vents.
If you hear extremely loud grinding or suspect a major failure, stop using the dryer and call a professional immediately.
If you are unsure or uncomfortable performing any step, STOP and contact a qualified professional.

Step-by-Step Basic Noise Checks

  1. Identify the Noise Type & Timing

Listen carefully. Is it a high-pitched squeal (often idler pulley/belt)? A rhythmic thump (often drum rollers)? A metallic scrape (glides or object)? A constant hum or grind (motor)? Does it happen only when the drum turns, or constantly when the dryer is on?

  2. Check Inside the Drum

Unplug the dryer. Carefully inspect inside the drum, especially along the edges and inside the baffles (fins), for loose objects like coins, buttons, pens, or small toys that might be rattling or scraping as the drum turns. Remove any objects found.

    Check Inside the Drum
  3. Check Lint Filter & Housing

Unplug the dryer. Remove the lint filter. Check the filter itself and the housing it slides into for any foreign objects that might be causing noise or rattling.

  4. Check Blower Wheel Area (Use Caution)

Unplug the dryer. The blower wheel moves air through the vent. Sometimes small items can get past the lint filter and rattle in the blower housing. Depending on your model, you might be able to see or reach the blower wheel area by removing the lint filter or potentially an access panel (check manual, proceed with caution). Check for obstructions. Do not force parts.

Noise Persists? Likely Worn Parts - Time for a Pro

If you've checked for obvious obstructions and the noise continues, especially if it's a distinct squeal, thump, or grind related to the drum's rotation, it strongly indicates worn internal components like drum support rollers, glides, the idler pulley, or potentially the motor bearings.
Replacing these parts requires disassembling the dryer cabinet. To ensure the correct parts are replaced safely and effectively, contact a qualified appliance repair professional.
