Step-by-Step Basic Checks for No Draining
Clean the Dishwasher Filter
Turn off power first! Locate and remove the dishwasher filter(s) at the bottom of the tub (check manual). Clean them thoroughly under running water, removing all food debris and gunk. A clogged filter is a very common cause of poor draining. Reinstall correctly.
Check the Drain Hose
Turn off power. Locate the corrugated drain hose running from the dishwasher (usually under the sink). Check its entire length for sharp kinks or visible clogs. Ensure it's securely connected.
Check Connection Point (Garbage Disposal / Air Gap)
Where does the drain hose connect under your sink?
- If to Garbage Disposal: Ensure the disposal is not clogged. Run the disposal briefly (with water running) to clear it. Sometimes, the knockout plug inside the disposal's dishwasher inlet wasn't removed during installation – this requires disconnecting the hose and removing the plug (professional help recommended if unsure).
- If to Air Gap: The air gap is a small cylinder usually mounted on the sink deck. Unscrew the cap and check for debris buildup inside. Clean it out if necessary.
Check Kitchen Sink Drain
Ensure your kitchen sink itself is draining freely. A clogged sink drain can prevent the dishwasher from draining properly.
